Based on the books, movies, and TV shows I watched this year these are my favorite of the three.
For many 2017 wasn’t the best year and even I can say it added more stress to my life than I needed. However, fiction is our way of escaping that reality even for a short amount of time. Most of these I have talked about on my blog in some way, but instead of doing a top 6 of each category, I’m just going to round it out to all.
And these are my personal favorites. Some have their flaws, but are what I personally enjoyed.
I didn’t see many new movies this year. This is actually one of the first years I went to the theater more than once in years. And let me tell you, at the beginning of the year I wasn’t expecting IT to be on this list. It scared me as a kid and never really stuck, until this new adaptation.
Looking back it’s one of the few movies I can say I still genuinely like even after hearing others talk about their likes and dislikes. I said it before: don’t go in expecting a horror movie but a movie about characters dealing with their own fears and defeating them.
AND even though the first scene traumatized me, it’s still #1 on the list.
2.) Attack on Titan
I’m not just talking about the second season but the show as a whole. My first anime and I love it. It’s one of my favorite shows and I’m still working on the manga. It even got me interested in learning Japanese.
As much as I love the first season I do want to talk about the second. With less episodes it said what it needed to. It also has one of the best scenes I’ve ever watched in not just animation, but in general.
3.) Marvel’s Runaways
I mentioned this before: I thought this was going to be another X-Men series. I didn’t know anything about Runaways, but once I saw the trailer I got excited. And here I am 8 episodes in and still excited. Easily my new favorite show of the year with a diverse group of characters and different from other Marvel adaptations.
I actually got the first three comics for Christmas so expect a review for those, plus a review of the overall season once it’s finished.
4.) The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue
An unexpected read, my sister gave this to me as she got an extra copy. It’s not the usual book I get into, but once I did, I finished it in less than a day. It’s about a boy named Henry living in 18th century Europe running away from his responsibilities and expectations life set for him while dealing with his attraction towards the same-sex.
One of my top recommended reads.
This hit the right notes for me. A protagonist I like, a love interest that actually works, and a plot I enjoyed getting engrossed in. I said it before but I love the world of Warcross and the way it’s implemented in society. What starts out a simple plan turns into a scary situation and I can’t wait for the sequel.
6.) Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie
I waited so long for this conclusion to Hey Arnold! I always reminded myself throughout the year it’s actually happening. For the longest time I believed Arnold’s parents to be alive and the most satisfying ending finally came to us. I couldn’t be happier.
However this may not be the end for Hey Arnold! There are talks of the show returning and I’d be all for it.
- the princess saves herself in this one
- Stranger Things 2
- Wonder Woman
- Guardians of the Galaxy 2
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Based on all the movies/books that came out this year I haven’t seen all that I wanted to. Some examples being Spider-Man, Logan, The Disaster Artist, to start. But I am looking forward to all that’s coming out in 2018.
