Unboxing: Scribbler October 2018

The subscription box for writers by authors.

First, I’d like to thank Scribbler for sending me a box to review. Not only is Scribbler a great box to get in general for any type of writer, but with NaNoWriMo just around the corner, it may come even more in handy.

Each month is a different theme when it comes to writing, which you get in a “passport” style book. One month may revolve around characters, another the setting. This month is plotting.

What I like about Scribbler is that you get a book each month and the author gives you advice about the theme and insight into the publishing process, and for someone as an aspiring author, I can take all the advice I can get.

*contains spoilers for October 2018 box*

The Night Stalker by Robert Bryndza

In the dead of a sweltering hot summer’s night, Detective Erika Foster is called to a murder scene. The victim, a doctor, is found suffocated in bed. His wrists are bound and his eyes are bulging through a clear plastic bag tied over his head.

The books themselves fit the theme of the month. I did a review for Sadie, which came in last month’s box, and absolutely loved it. I’m just as excited for this one as well.

It also came with a signed sticker.

Sugar Skull Notebook by Piccadilly

This notebook is everything. I love sugar skulls and the design is beautiful. Not only that but I love the paper. For me, when it comes to notebooks, I can be picky about the paper (which is stupid, I know) but it’s thick and makes it so much better.

Candle by Novelly Yours Candlesย

The scent is “Muse Fuse” which is coffee, vanilla, and orange. I’ll be honest I’m not a huge fan of the scent of coffee, BUT the orange still comes through and I strangely like it. I wasn’t expecting to.

Buttons

Two different sets of buttons came in the box.

King Gaiman

This one is great. Last month came with a JK Rowling magnet similar to this button. And it’s technically an enamel pin.

Writer’s Buttons by HPB.com

I love all of these. It’s a limited edition set just for writers. I just don’t know where I’m going to put them all, which is a good dilemma to have.

“Your Story Matters” Temporary Tattoo

I want to thank Scribbler for the inspiration for my next real tattoo. The only problem is, where to put it.

Side note: as you can see I put it on my wrist after taking the group photo, but I put it on my freaking right wrist, and I am right-handed, so taking the picture was a fun experience.

Writer Essentialsย

As I said, this month’s writing passport is plotting. Included is an inside look into the publishing process that includes copy edits for The Night Stalker, and a writing exercise.

Invitation to Chat with Lindsey Rose

I’ll be honest, when I receive things like this in a box, you know, to go online and do something, I usually ignore it, but this one I may take part in. Lindsey is a Senior Editor at Grand Central Publishing, and as many knows, I’m working on getting my book published. This is something I definitely don’t want to miss.

Overall

Scribbler is $29.99 for a monthly subscription and those subscribed get free shipping. Whether you want to write a novel, short story, or are a blogger, any kind of writing tips can always help someone become better.

I just want to add that not only do I love the actual design of the box, but there were tiny, plastic spiders within the orange and black paper. I got more excited than I should have over that.

I reviewed a number of boxes on here and I think when it comes to pricing, Scribbler sits in the middle, but you get your money’s worth. Of course, if you aren’t a writer then this box may not be for you but can be bought as a gift for the writer in your life.
