Personal Quibbles: Blogging Burnout and Writer’s Block

Why I’m taking an impromptu break.

At the beginning of the year, I had a goal to post twice a week and beat my blogging stats each month and managed to do both up until the beginning of this month.

Because of the holiday weekend, I said on Twitter I wouldn’t be posting anything so I wouldn’t be stressing about my blog while working long hours and being super tired afterward, but then that mini-break turned into a week of not posting and now it’s been even longer than that.

Why?ย

I just haven’t felt like it. I haven’t felt like writing in general. I managed to watch Stranger Things 3 over the holiday and planned on doing a review, but I ended up rewriting the damn thing five times and I’m still nowhere near getting it done. It wasn’t coming out. I couldn’t write it the way I wanted to. I stressed for an entire day off, writing and rewriting to get nowhere.

Posting twice a week, sometimes more sometimes less, for six months with an almost full-time job while trying to get my book published and keeping an exercise routine seemed to burn me out. I hated that I felt like I needed to finish a book so I could post a review. My blog isn’t a job (that would be awesome) and I post because I enjoy it, but I haven’t been enjoying it.

It wasn’t just posting on my blog. I haven’t been on Twitter or talking to any of my friends there or here. I just haven’t felt like it. I’ve spent some more time outside or doing crossword puzzles or watching travel vlogs on Youtube.

I’m also craving a trip to the beach. It’s pretty sad how badly I need to go, which won’t happen for about a month. If I don’t spend some time outside of this…lovely town I lose it at some point. I’m not exaggerating, I need to get away from this place.

Where Do I Go From Here?ย

Here’s the thing: I’m in the middle of a long stretch of work until I’m off (nine days in a row) and I don’t usually post as much when that happens. I’d like to. I plan to at some point next week.

I just don’t want to force myself to do it.

At this point, I’m just waiting on vacation. Since I’m saving money for that, I’m putting self-publishing my book on hold. I haven’t requested any NetGalley books or put in for any book tours.

I would like to go to the drive-in at some point this month and on the 31st, am going to my first Queen and Adam Lambert concert.

That’s pretty much everything I wanted to say so in case someone is actually wondering why I haven’t posted or been online in general, I needed a break.

Hi there! Itโ€™s super important to take blogging breaks. I even just started my blog and quickly found this out. What I found that has been helping me is scheduling posts and then using Hootsuite to promote them, that way itโ€™s not as draining when Iโ€™m trying to hashtag everything when trying to promote it. Nonetheless, enjoy your trip to the beach. You deserve it! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Taking a break can be super important. It is easy to burn out because of the stress from pressuring ourselves to maintain a certain schedule. I had to take a couple day break from my blog a couple months ago. It was just getting so draining to write and schedule posts for every day of the week. It would totally be a different story if these blogs were a paid part-time or full-time job for us, but most of us do this as a hobby, so for fun. When it stops being fun, it is time for a break.

Enjoy your time off, enjoy the beach, and when you are refreshed and ready to get back to blogging, we’ll be here to welcome you back. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am doing better, thank you. It’s weird because I only ended up taking a two day break to reevaluate my daily posting schedule and come up with a new one. So far it seems to be working, but I’m trying not to stress out if I miss a day here or there.

Taking a break is so important to prevent burn out and ease stress. So take as long as you need lovely. Your blog will still be here when you get back. ๐Ÿ™‚ What I’ve found helps with a break is to preschedule content or use guest bloggers. x
