Meet the Cats Living In My Garage

The orange one won’t stop meowing at me.

I wanted to talk about this for a while but also wanted to wait for any developments on the situation. I live in an area where cats roam. Usually, you assume they belong to a house up the street. My family cat growing up did the same.

Over the summer, I noticed a black cat hanging around my neighbor’s, and like I said, assumed the house above my neighbor’s or even above them, owned the cat. And for months, I didn’t see or think about the cat.

About a month ago, my sister commented on a black cat hanging around our garage, and again, didn’t think too much of it. Cats passed through over the years, but once it snowed, and I noticed small paw prints every morning, usually new, I became more curious.

One morning when taking my dog out (and note the yard is fenced in with a few holes, big enough for a cat to go through) saw the black cat running into our garage. I put my dog inside and followed, assuming it went to the second floor of the garage, which isn’t safe for a human to walk across anymore.

When I got to the top, expecting to find the black cat, I saw an orange one chilling in the corner. Plot twist.

I asked my neighbor, who said the black one was living under their porch all summer but didn’t think they belonged to anyone. I called the local humane society, who wasn’t taking cats in (this was less than a week to Christmas) and they advised we take pictures and put them on a lost pets page on Facebook, but until we figured out what’s going on, keep them fed. Which I have. And I named them Harry and Ron.

Every day I looked and every day the food disappeared, but we were never able to get a good picture since, for a while, we didn’t see either of them.

It wasn’t until, a week ago from writing this, I spotted the black cat (Harry) running into the garage while the orange one (Ron) hung out at my neighbor’s.

Ron is a vocal cat. It, no joke, sat on my neighbor’s railing, meowing, at night. It looked straight out of a cartoon. It ran into our basement as my dad was putting away Christmas lights. Ron gets close when you take food up and has started hanging around more often. It meows at me after I feed it. I take it as a thank you. We assume, Ron either belongs to someone or did.

Harry, on the other hand, is rarely seen. Except for the few times I spot him running into the garage, you never know where he is and I can never find him hiding in the garage. He just blends into everything. We assume Harry is a stray, but you never know.

I do know, they are clean cats.

However, the reason I wanted to write this post is because of the picture my sister took of them, chilling in the garage together.

At the moment, we don’t know their genders, however, my sister thinks she caught them in a private moment, which was and still is my worst nightmare because not only was I, but the human society, worried about kittens. And I’d rather one give birth in our garage than in the woods or somewhere worse.

So, we put out bins for them to sleep and lay in. My dad found an old, rather big litter box, and we also bought a big bin. Until I can find straw, we’re using blankets and towels to keep them warm. Luckily, it’s been pretty warm around here and doesn’t seem like it’s going to get super cold any time soon.

As I’m writing this, my sister posted the picture on the lost animal page, but I would be super surprised for someone to claim them. The humane society also recommended maybe giving them to a farmer to become a barn cat, but right now, especially with the genders unknown as well as the possibility of pregnancy, I’d rather they stay where they are.

Around here, I’d rather keep them with food than let them wander into the wrong yard.

And that’s Harry and Ron. I don’t mind having them around or buying them food (and taking them out the occasional snack.) Unfortunately, the road I live next to is awful and my family lost a few cats over the years who wandered into the street, so there is that to worry about, but they seem to stay in the back yard, next to the woods.

If there is an update on Harry and Ron, I’ll make sure to include it in a monthly recap in the future. This was just something I felt like talking about but I’ll be posting my regular posts soon. Or maybe I’ll talk about my ACTUAL pets.

Aww Harry and Ron! They’re lucky to have you- for now! That’s so nice that your family is taking care of them. I worry about kittens too, so hopefully if there is a pregnancy, they’ll stay in your garage and be safe. But I hope they can be adopted and spayed/neutered, because as much as I love kittens, I hate seeing cats in shelters and not adopted 😦 But please keep us updated on Harry and Ron! They’re so cute!

I definitely will keep an update for them. We’re taking our time, not wanting to get too close even though Ron seems super friendly, but hopefully when the time comes we could get the neutured (if they aren’t and if they’re still with us) because I totally agree. The last thing we need is more cats needing a home.
