Memory loss, two misfits with extraordinary powers, and an unlikely friendship.

As someone who is a fan of the superhero genre I know watching/reading the same story over and over again can get dry, so when I read the synopsis for this book I immediately wanted to read a different type of hero story.

Jamie woke up two years ago in an empty apartment with no memory and only a few clues to who he might be, as well as the power to read other people’s memories. In the meantime, he’s become the Mind Robber, holding up banks for quick cash.

Similarly, Zoe is searching for her past, and using her new extraordinary abilities of speed and strength… to deliver fast food. And occasionally beat up bad guys, if she feels like it.

When the two meet in a memory-loss support group, they realize they are each other’s best chance at discovering what happened to them. The quest will take them deep into a medical conspiracy that is threatening to spill out and wreak havoc on their city, and possibly the country. As the two work through their respective barriers, they’ll realize that their friendship is the thing that gives them the greatest power of all.

Review

My favorite part of this book is the relationship between Jamie and Zoe. Despite not knowing the who each other actually is, Jamie the “Mind Robber” and Zoe “The Throwing Star,” they immediately feel like they know each other. Zoe has more of an extraverted personality, Jamie introverted, but it works. Zoe brings Jamie out of his shell more and Jamie helps reign Zoe in and think over a situation first.

I also like the message that anyone can be a hero, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done. For Jamie and Zoe, they have a fresh start. Their lives are literally a blank page. Even though Jamie went down the route of robbing banks, it’s not what it seems. He also has a cat named Normal and she’s great.

The main focus of the book is their friendship and how they choose to use their powers. I’ll be honest and say I wish I understood the villain more, but again, it brings home the message that anyone can become the hero or villain depending on your situation and how you view it.

We Could Be Heroes is a fun read and a different take on the superhero genre. I liked the mystery aspect of Jamie and Zoe discovering who they were and how they got their powers. We Could Be Heroes is a recommendation from me.
