A small choice leads to a new superhero.
Thanks to Loki and the opening of the Multiverse, What If…? explores what would happen if the slightest change caused something bigger. In this case, Peggy becomes the first super soldier.
The beginning of the show is narrated by Jeffrey Wright’s Watcher. His voice kept giving me chills and I don’t know why, but I’m loving him as the Watcher and hopefully he can show up in live-action as well. He lets you know the smallest change, a different line or choice, can make a huge impact.
A lot of the episode plays out like Captain America: The First Avenger, but with Peggy taking the lead. Steve is still there and even though he physically didn’t change, still gets to be part of the fight.
As the episode goes on, you realize different things that didn’t happen would lead to other things not happening and it’s fun to think about how that effected the future in that universe.
I would like that poster for my room thanks.
The animation is great and even the backgrounds have a lot of detail. I liked that (most of) the actors came back to voice the characters. Peggy appeared physically stronger than Captain America Steve but that could just be because they have more freedom to show her doing more.
What If…? is a fun way to think about the Marvel Universe and how the smallest details could change a huge outcome. I’ll be honest and say and I wasn’t sure how much I would like this show, but so far, I’m really liking it. It would be cool to see how/if any of these characters show up in live-action.
The episode isn’t long (longer than the first episodes of WandaVision) and goes by quick. We’re familiar with these characters but I like seeing them react to different scenarios. Overall, a fun watch that gets you thinking.
I say this about every show I watch but I would like to make these weekly reviews and because What If…? is more of an anthology series, and the reviews will be a bit shorter than usual, it should work.
